Distractions

When I downloaded Leo Babauta's book, Focus, I was reminded of a phenomenon that had recently begun to bother me again.

When I was on the bus today, everybody was on a phone playing Tetris, texting, or listening to music. There was no social engagement.

When I go to the gym, everybody has iPod buds in and nobody talks.

When I walk between classes, nobody looks up from the sidewalk.

I think this is a very sad state of affairs. I know that confidence is attractive, and actually noticing the world around you looks very much like confidence. Have the courage to be where and who you are instead of wishing you were not there.

  1. Wow! I just had the same observation a month or so ago when I was out to lunch with two former co-workers. I actually told them they were rude because they spent the entire lunch checking their cells and taking calls.

We are becoming a society where we use technology to disengage from our current and actual surroundings. Everyone seems to be ever present in the cyberworld, but painfully absent from real life. Sad state of affairs....
